Assam

The main dresses of Assam are Silk Fiber or Muga and very famous for its design and style. In Assam state, most of the women prefer to wear the traditional costume ‘Muga’ or ‘Mekhela Chadar’. These costumes have a lot of demand not only in India but other parts of the world as well.

The designs are very beautiful to see and used ‘Eri’ and ‘Paat’ a type of silk to weave the cloth. ‘Eri’ used to create winter clothing particularly shawls and ‘Paat’ used for ‘Mekhela Chadar’. Both kind of dresses bring the attractive and amazing look to the women.

Silk saris of Assam are most popular in India and demanded throughout the country. They sarees are made of fine woven, delicate designs and exceptional patterns are employed for the designing purpose. Embroideries are also used as per the cultural norms and incorporated beautifully like stone-sculptures and architecture on the famous Madan Kamdev Temple.

Costumes for Women of Assam:

Mekhla-Chadar or the traditional sari is an ensemble of two or three pieces, one of which is worn as the petticoat and the other as the ‘anchalsari. Besides this, different tribes of Assam have their own unique pattern of dressing, like the Rigu-Rijamphai for a Dimasa woman and the Chin-Fa Nangwait pattern for a Thai-Phake woman.
