Nagaland
Nagaland is a state in Northeast India. It borders the state of Assam to the west, Arunachal Pradesh and part of Assam to the north, Burma to the east, and Manipur to the south. The state capital is Kohima, and the largest city is Dimapur.
Traditional Costumes of Nagaland encompass various types of Shawls.
The beautiful shawls are amongst the most popular tradition dresses of the place.
These shawls are separately designed for every tribe to be able to differentiate between them easily.
These categories are further divided into categories and sub-categories narrowing down the designs for each one of them.
The shawl is also different as per the role of the person.
For Example, the ornate warrior-celebrating shawl, called Tsungkotepsu is a characteristic of the Aos clan.
Costumes for Women of Nagaland
- Women in general are dressed in plain blue cloth and a white cloth with black marginal bands of changing breadth. Women often wear men's garment.
- The casual costume of a dress of Angami women includes a petticoat called neikhro, a sleeveless top called vatchi, a white skirt called pfemhou.
- The Ze-liangs-rong, a mixed group of Zemis, Liangmais and Rongmei exhibit themselves in costumes, considerably same with that of the Angami tribe.
- The commonest costume is a white cloth, contrasted with six black bands of varying measurements at both ends.
- The costume of the Zemei women is restricted to white-coloured clothes and skirts with very narrow black and red border.
- Costumes differ from village to village and also from clan to clan.
- The clothing of females in Ao tribe is skirt that can be found in different colors and designs.
- It is draped all across the waist to make tight grip.
- Skirts are available in a wide variety to choose from for girls so they are lucky to change their skirts on a regular basis.
- The skirt clad Naga girls look simply awesome and attractive.
- The Ao skirts include several verities like Azu jangnup su in yellow, red and black stripes.
Costumes of Men in Nagaland
- There is a famous black shawl worn my men in Nagaland known as Ratapfe.
- The shawl is embroidered in 3 or 4 lines and looks simply attractive.
- The villages of western Angami have exclusive style of clothing design.
- Lothas’ shawls are put on in festivals and special occasions.
- Phichu-pfe is also a unique and stylish costume for men mainly priest's costume.
